We waited as the rest of the candidates trickled in, each one bearing the marks of their struggles through the maze. Some were exhausted, others elated. The grumpy examiner appeared once more. His presence was like a dark cloud over the room.

“Well, well, look at the lot of you,” he sneered. “You managed to stumble your way through a simple maze. Don’t pat yourselves on the back just yet, you’re still just bugs beneath my feet.”

His insults were as relentless as ever, and he seemed to relish in our discomfort. “You all barely managed to scrape by. Don’t get too comfortable, because the next and final test is about to begin.”

He announced the next test with the same level of disdain he’d shown us since the beginning. “The Ethereal Echo,” he declared. “You will accurately reproduce a complex spell after seeing it performed only once. This will test your magical memory and replication skills. Though I doubt any of you imbeciles will pass.”

I began to wonder why I had to go through such ridiculous tests just to make use of a library. It wasn’t as if I wanted to become a sorcerer. This world’s logic didn’t make sense, but then again, I couldn’t judge it by Earth’s standards.

The final test sounded challenging. I wasn’t a sorcerer nor a magic scholar. Reproducing a spell would be incredibly difficult.
